In 2004, Crash took home the Best Picture — a controversial choice in hindsight — for weaving together overwrought stories of racism and stereotypes. Disconnect feels like much of the same, only instead of the dangers of prejudice, it’s all about the dangers of our relationship to the Internet.
An ensemble cast that includes Jason Bateman, Alexander Skarsgard, Paula Patton, Hope Davis, and Frank Grillo is injected into tales of “catfishing,” identity theft, the sex trade, cyberbullying, and federal investigations. Presumably, there’s going to be some big (i.e. pedantic) lesson that is constantly pushed in your face the whole time, just like its predecessor. Even the title is a little too on the nose.
