Spotify’s dedicated Pride hub, is back…and just in time for Mardi Gras!
#PressPlayForPride is dedicated to celebrating diversity and intersectionality of LGBT+ artists and their allies, covering an array of music genres and themes.
Playlists include ‘Mardi Gras Party’, ‘Alternative Pride’, Pride Classics’ and playlists curated by LGBT icons including Troye Sivan # PressPlayForPride (featuring special commentary about his life and coming out).
Tegan and Sara, who town to headline the official Mardi Gras after party, also have a playlist alongside Alan Cumming, Adam Lambert, Kelly Osbourne and more.
Spotify boasts a continued commitment to Diversity & Inclusion, most recently being nominated in two categories at Australia’s first LGBT Awards in the categories LGBT Company of the Year and Diversity Leader of the Year.
Last year, as part of their continued Diversity & Inclusion initiatives, Spotify introduced a gender non-binary option both in its job application process and during the platform signup flow (via an option in account settings).
“For our product to be truly inclusive, truly reflective of our users, and different from our competitors, we wanted to show progressive leadership in this space. Providing the option for people who do not feel comfortable with, or who simply do not identify within traditional binary genders (male or female), was a no-brainer and was long overdue,” said a Spotify spokesperson.
Spotify also introduced ‘Queer Rap’ education on the platform, which is an open segment that aims to highlight that not all rap is gay offensive.
‘Queer Rap’ explains that rap music by the LGBT+ community can be likened to NWA and Public Enemy rapping about politics and racial issues – equality and gender identity rights are expressed through music.
“Spotify is proud to be a company that champions diversity within its offices and the community. While there’s much more work to be done, we have a number of different initiatives to support LGBT+ rights within our company, our platform and our community, and we are thrilled to be recognised for our work in this space. We hope our staff and fans have a fantastic, safe and wonderfully colourful Mardi Gras,” said Kate Vale, Managing Director at Spotify Australia & New Zealand.
